Refuse to have kitchen refuse! Instead, use it to nourish the garden via our Kitchen Composter. The Kitchen composter takes advantage of fermenting technology using Bokashi Bran as a compost activator, resulting in compost 5 times more potent than typical compost from a compost heap.

Bokashi is a Japanese term meaning "Fermented Organic Matter". It is a bran-based material that has been fermented with effective microorganisms (friendly bacteria) and dried for storage. Bokashi is a pleasant smelling product which, when added to your Kitchen Composter, aids the fermentation of organic matter.

Conventional composting relies on oxygen-fed organisms to break down organic material. Bokashi uses different kinds of microbes that thrive without oxygen. They decompose organic matter through an anaerobic process. It's basic fermentation, the same process that gives us wine and pickles.

The Kitchen Composter features an air-tight lid, a spigot to drain off nutrient-rich liquid, and a two month supply of Bokashi Bran. Drain off the compost liquid and give it to your plants, as it is highly concentrated with beneficial microbes. Use one teaspoon of the liquid feed to 5 liters of water (rate of 1:100) and apply to garden or house plants. The liquid can also be poured into your kitchen drain, bathroom drain, or toilet, to prevent algae build-up and control odor.

Product Highlights:

  • Kit Includes: 600g Bag of Bokashi Bran (2 month supply of compost starter), 1 Compost Bucket, 1 Handle, 1 Drain Tray, 1 Compressor, 1 Spigot
  • Bokashi fermentation keeps the compost from smelling
  • No fruit flies because the fermentation process does not require air
  • Small & compact for the kitchen (18 liters)
  • Cooked and uncooked food may be safely composted, such as: food scraps & leftovers (fruit & vegetables, dairy products, meat & bones, fish), prepared foods (pizza, burgers, snacks, baked foods, cakes, and other organic material (spent flowers)

Burying Bokashi compost in a garden supplies plants with a nourishing food source and conditions the soil with enriching microbes. If the fermented Bokashi compost is being transferred directly to the garden, the material should be buried in a thin layer, at least a foot underground (to keep animals from digging for it) for 4-6 weeks prior to planting. Bokashi compost is initially fairly acidic, so be sure to put it in the ground slightly away from existing roots of trees and plants. After planting, compost will be converted to rich topsoil in about one month. Meets the nutrient requirements of plants with 1/5 or less of the normal volume of compost. Inoculates the soils with beneficial and effective microorganisms which detoxify chemically treated soil, feeds the natural soil ecology, and attracts beneficial insects and nematodes.

Bokashi Compost will look different to other compost that has decayed. As the food waste does not breakdown or decompose while it is in the bucket, much of its original physical property will remain and it will have a pickled appearance. Breakdown of waste will occur after it has been transferred to the soil.

You should be able to get compost tea from your compost after 4-6 weeks, however it is completely dependent on how often the unit is used, how much food waste is added, and what type of food waste is added.

Bokashi compost scraps can also be mixed into a regular/traditional compost pile instead of transferring to soil. The Bokashi mix is an excellent way to heat up the compost pile.
